How to find us
By Car: We are situated off the A44 Chipping Norton to Oxford road, turning at Enstone onto the B4022. This road brings you to the middle of Charlbury with the pub on the left at the crossroads. The entrance to our car park is on the left immediately before the crossroads, just past the Co-op which will be on your right.
From London take the M40 to junction 8 onto the A40 then onto the A44 following the signs for Woodstock/Blenheim Palace. Just through Woodstock take the B4437 to Charlbury.
If you are travelling by SatNav, please use the post code OX7 3QW. This will bring you down Browns Lane (a one-way street) to our car park.
By Train: Paddington to Charlbury takes 1 hour 10 minutes and our pub is a 10 minute walk from the station.
By Bus: there are direct routes from Oxford, Chipping Norton and Witney (no service on Sundays)
How this holiday makes a difference
We have a comprehensive policy to reduce, reuse and recycle and we actively encourage all our staff to be as careful with all resources as humanly possible while running a busy business.
Our water consumption is quite considerable, so we are always looking for ways to reduce this where practical. Three of our four rooms have showers (and we have plans afoot to make that four out of four!), we encourage our guests to re-use their towels / linen if staying for more than one night, the staff are all well briefed not to waste any water unnecessarily, our water butt is almost always sufficient to keep our plants and flowers well watered.
Our energy source is currently all from mains gas and electric but again we are very conscious of the volume of power required to run a business like ours and are constantly striving to keep any waste to a bare minimum. All bulbs are switched to low energy bulbs wherever possible and we have recently installed a sensor light system for the guest accommodation hallways and landings.
Charlbury is very well served by public transport, with a direct rail link to Oxford, Reading and London, and three bus services linking Charlbury with Oxford, Witney and Chipping Norton. Many of our guests travel to Charlbury by train, as the pub is only a short walk from the railway station, and the bus stop is within sight of our front door!
In terms of our suppliers, we almost exclusively work with local companies to minimise "food miles". The notable exception is our fish supplier, as we are almost as far from the sea as it is possible to get! Our fish is delivered fresh every day from the south-west, but they distribute from a central point in Bristol rather than driving up from Devon daily.
We actively promote a variety of local tourist attractions, to offer a wide choice for our guests as well as to support our neighbouring businesses. This will range from those on the doorstep, such as Charlbury Museum, to those a little further afield, such as the beautiful Batsford Arboretum.
We support a number of local charities (as well as a few national ones) through sponsorship, advertising, raffle prizes etc, and are particularly happy to support the local Meals on Wheels team by enabling them to use our premises for the distribution of their meals on a weekly basis.
All but one of our employees are very local or from nearby areas, so most of them can walk to work! We offer comprehensive training for all new starters, so they settle quickly and comfortably into their roles. As we are always striving to offer the best possible customer service, we are always reviewing our team performance to ensure it is matching those standards, and offering refresher training where required.
Set in the heart of the beautiful Oxfordshire Cotswolds, Charlbury is the perfect spot from which to explore the wonderful land in which we live.
The town lies on the famous Oxfordshire Way, which runs from Bourton-in-the-Water to the River Thames at Henley, and has provided many miles of stunning walks for tens of thousands of visitors over the years. More immediately, Charlbury is surrounded by beautiful countryside as well as the ancient and historic Wychwood Forest. Details of three circular walks from Charlbury are provided in each of the guest bedrooms.
There are several organised events which make the most of the local countryside, such as the Wychwood Forest Fair, held annually, and the Open Walks held at various times throughout the year at Cornbury Park.
